This long-distance letter is franked with a 24 Pf Control Council postage stamp which has been cancelled with a single strike of the Göttingen e circular date stamp, dated 3.8.46.
It also bears two different censor handstamp marks, one numbered 15401, the other 15372. They were both struck by British censors in Peine. 15401 was struck first – you can see that it is partially obscured by the second sealing tape, which was applied before the 15372 mark was made.
Why two marks? The first mark was made by the person who censored the contents of the letter; the second mark was made by a supervisor after checking that the censor had applied the rules of censorship correctly.
